On the map around the Okhotsk Sea you may see lyric names such as Schastya (Happiness) Bay, Cape and Gulf of Patience. The cape got its name in 1643 from Dutch seaman Maarten Gerritszoon de Vries, who had to wait out heavy mist here.

In winter the temperature at the sea surface is from −1,8 to 2,0 °C, in summer the temperature grows up to  10-18 °C. Below superficial layer at the depths of about 50-150 m there is an intermediate cold water layer, temperature of which is −1,7 °C and it doesn`t change throughout the year.
